This opening round should be particularly exciting with all the All Blacks that are available:

North Harbour v Canterbury – Canterbury by 10

Shock horror Canterbury haven’t won this tournament for 2 years!!! They won 9 out fo the previous 10 years and are always at the top end of the table. With the All Blacks at their disposal you’d think they would start the season with a win against Harbour who are in for a tough season.

Waikato v Wellington – Wellington by 3

This should be a cracker of a game with Waikato and Wellington having cracking games in recent seasons. Surprisingly this will be the first time that Ardie and Julian Savea have played together for Wellington!

The New Zealand Sport Radio podcast is available on Spotify, iTunes, iHeartRadio, Acast and many more podcatchers.

I think with Waikato’s cost cutting (as you’ll hear in the interview) meaning that they have less contracted players, I think that the strong Wellington squad will have just too much this weekend.

Otago v Auckland – Auckland by 10

Oh boy it’s going to be a tough day at the office for Otago. As you’ll hear in the interview though they have had time together. On the flip side there has been very little time for this Auckland team to gel with it’s All Blacks.

You have to think though that the extra quality that Auckland have been able to bring in should swing it their way.

Counties Manukau v Tasman – Tasman by 7

You don’t get much of a tougher opening fixture than the reigning Premiership Champions with their All Blacks. This is going to be a really hard game for Counties and it’s another away win on the cards.

Northland v Manawatu – Northland by 5

This should be a cracking game between two sides that are aiming for the Championship finals. There aren’t a lot of All Blacks involved but the two that are top draw. Seeing Aaron Smith and Jack Goodhue back for their provinces is just fantastic.

I’m backing home advantage to be the difference here.

Taranaki v Bay of Plenty – Bay of Plenty by 10

Taranki will be cursing the injury to Scoot and knock that Beauden Barrett took in the North v South game. They “only” have one Barrett available in Jordie.

The Bay (yup they won Battle of the Bays last year) though have All Blacks Captain Sam Cane available!!! Bay of Plenty were promoted for a good reason and add in some quality All Blacks will make them stronger. Yup another away win on the cards

Southland v Hawke’s Bay – Southland by 3

Oh boy both these sides will be looking for a good start. The more I think about it the more I think I’ve got it wrong. This could go either way as Southland are a much stronger outfit than people realise. Hawke’s Bay youngsters are a year wiser but they have lost a couple of experienced heads. This is one not to miss.
