MLR 2020 Round 5 Predictions

Finally I might have got a handle on the Major League Rugby teams. After a really tough opening three rounds of picking I got 6 from 6 last weekend. With this still being such a new league it can take a couple of weeks to see where the teams are at. I wasn’t expecting the Eastern conference to dominate in the way they have. Sixth in the East would be seventh in the West!

Here’s how Round 4 went down:

Colorado Raptors v Toronto Arrows – Toronto Arrows by 7

There’s a new rule for MLR picking and that’s to pick the Arrows. They always have a tough start to the season as they play away for the first half. To have a perfect start on the road is fantastic for them. The second half of the season should be easier when they are at home.

The Raptors are a shadow of their former selves. Sure they got their first win of the season last weekend. However that was over Utah who are not great shakes themselves. This is another win on the road for the Arrows.

New Orleans Gold v New England Free Jacks – New Orleans Gold by 5

NOLA have been really up and down. However can forgive them for losing to Legion last weekend, let’s be honest most teams will. Even so this has become a must win game for them. Being in the South all their home games come in the first half of the season. With all that travel in the second half of the season they need to pick up the wins now.

The Free Jacks are exactly who NOAL want to see, a side who are on a run of losses and for whom the travel is probably catching up with. Home win here for me.

Houston SaberCats v Austin Gilgronis – Houston SaberCats by 3

As we come over to the West there are a couple of matches between teams that really need a win. The SaberCats picked up a win in the opening round and it looked like they could be up for a decent season. Three losses to teams from the East have followed though.

The Gilgronis haven’t won a game in over a year. They did get a draw against Utah a couple of weeks ago. They are obviously looking to go one better but I just can’t see it happening on the road.

Seattle Seawolves v Utah Warriors – Seattle Seawolves by 10

The two times reigning champions finally picked up their first victory of the season last weekend! Whilst they are hosting second in the West in the shape of Utah, that’s more a reflection on how badly all the sides in the West have been going.

Utah also only have one win to their name. Again I just can’t see them adding to that on the road. Starfire Stadium has one of the best atmospheres around and Seattle should be lifted by that.

Old Glory DC v Rugby ATL – Old Glory DC by 3

The East is really competitive and that’s down to the expansion teams going so well. Old Glory have had issues up front but are still getting the results including beating the reigning champions!

ATL started really well but have come unstuck over the last couple of weekends. I think that they’ll find this trip up north a tough one will be looking for the LBP.

San Diego Legion v Rugby United New York – San Diego Legion by 7

The first rule of MLR picking comes into force here. Legion to win as they have done all season. This though should be a really good game.

RUNY came unstuck in the opening game of the season but have put three wins back to back together since then. Sure the opposition hasn’t been the strongest but you can only play the team in front of you. I still can’t see them getting the win but it should be a stern test for Legion.

Record So Far

14 from 24 or 58% 6 from 6 last round! Maybe things are on the up.
