6 Nations 2020 Round 4 Predictions

We’ve moved from talking about to the weather to talking about Corvid19 around the 6 Nations this year. The rugby isn’t being overlooked but it’s not the main focus unfortunately. Hopefully all the remaining games will get to go a head as scheduled and that they reschedule the Ireland v Italy game soon. It would feel really strange waiting until October of something to know who the winner is.

I’m testing my 6 Nations picks against the TAB in my series DrivingMaul v The Bookie. Check out how I went in Round 3 btw I’m happy to say I’m up over the tournament.

Ireland v Italy – Ireland by 20

I know that the game between Ireland and Italy has been postponed. However this is what I would have picked if the game was going ahead.

Esse has climbed above me to take the top spot! But there’s all still to play for in the DrivingMaul Supporters prediction league.

England v Wales – England by 7

This is a fairly easy call as it’s a fixture that tends to be won by the home side. Wales last won at Twikenham back in the 2015 rugby world cup and their last away win against England in the 6 Nations was in 2012. Obviously history doesn’t tell us how these teams are going but it can be a good guide.

Looking at more recent form both sides have lost to France in this years tournament. The big difference for me though was that England’s loss was in France where as Wales got beaten at home.

Also Wales are in a more transitional phase than England. For England it’s a matter of building with a young squad that went well at the Rugby World Cup. Where as Wales have a new coach and are looking to change their style of play a lot more. Wayne Pivac needs time to establish that, if you believe Ben Darwin’s cohesion theory then Pivac should be given 10 games to show how he’s doing.

Scotland v France – France by 5

History can sometimes be misleading. When we are talking about this French side that’s the case. Sure their last win in Murrayfield was back in 2014 but this is a very different French side. Remember France came fourth in the last two years but are chasing a Grand Slam this time around.

Scotland really are disappointing and have been doing so for about a year now. A win and a draw last season as well as not making the knockouts at the Rugby World Cup shows that this malaise has been going on for a while. We’ve seen that lead to Russel their world class fly-half leaving the squad and you have to wonder how long Townsend can last?

Record So Far

8 from 9 or 89%, France winning in Cardiff upset my perfect record.

Women’s 6 Nations

The Women’s 6 Nations is also taking place with the fixtures copying the men’s tournament.

England v Wales England by 40
Scotland v France France by 30
Ireland v Italy Ireland by 3

As usual England and France are expected to pickup big victories. Prior to this tournament I thought that Italy were in with a good shout of taking out third. They are still fighting for it but Ireland have put up a good showing. Having Italy v Scotland postponed/cancelled last round means it’s been several weeks between games for Italy. I think the home advantage plus that Ireland have had more game time will be the deciding factor this weekend.

Record So Far

5 from 6 or 83%, going well so far.
