I think that there are only two Major League Rugby predictions from pre-season that are holding strong! The first two rounds have been a real eye opener. Are the surprises going to keep on coming?
Here’s how Round 2 went down:
Colorado Raptors v New Orleans Gold – Colorado Raptors by 3
Both these sides have disappointed so far this year. The Raptors have opened with two losses and sit bottom of the West Conference. Where as NOLA who were supposed to be the experienced team in East Conference sit mid-table.
With both sides under performing it’s really hard to pick, also we haven’t seen if NOLA’s travelling woes from last season will continue. I’m backing the home side as the game is at altitude and NOLA historically don’t revel well.
Austin Gilgronis v Utah Warriors – Utah Warriors by 3
Not much was expected from these two sides this season. So Utah sitting third in the West is a good start for them. The Gilgronis might not have got a win but at least they have a bonus point. Remember Austin didn’t win any games last season.
With Utah looking better than we thought you have to go with the away win here. I don’t have much confidence though as again they are a team that doesn’t travel well.
Houston SaberCats v Old Glory DC – Houston SaberCats by 5
The SaberCats might have lost last weekend but that was on the road to one of the top two teams in the competition. A lot of sides will get beaten by the Arrows so there’s no shame in that loss.
DC did get off the mark against the Seawolves but that left me with more questions about the Seawolves than positive feelings for DC. Remember DC lost by 33 points in the opening weekend to NOLA. The SaberCats at home should have enough for the win here.
Seattle Seawolves v Toronto Arrows – Toronto Arrows by 3
What has gone wrong with Seattle? The Two time Champions have opened the season up with two losses! Away to the Legion can be explained but away to an expansion team? This weekend they get to play at home to one of the best atmospheres in rugby and boy they are going to need that support.
The Arrows have started the season well, sure they are the only Canadian team and so have a lot of influence from the national side. However you still have to put the performances on the pitch and they have the same salary cap rules as everyone else. Toronto are looking good and have a real opportunity to upset the champions in their own park this weekend.
Rugby ATL v Rugby United New York – Rugby ATL by 3
Rugby ATL really have surprised me with their results so far. Utah we thought would struggle but I think are better than we expected. NOLA don’t travel well but were expected to be pace setters in the East. It’s a great start for the Rattle Snakes as the fans are calling them.
RUNY on the other hand have disappointed. It feels like they have spent too much time on big name signings than building a team. They did get the win last weekend but that was over Austin who haven’t won in over a year. I think this is going to be a much more difficult road trip than they were expecting pre-season. Also remember this is the third game on the road for RUNY.
San Diego Legion v New England Free Jacks – San Diego Legion by 10
I think everyone had the East as a shootout between the Legion and Seawolves. Whilst the Seawolves haven’t lived up to that teh Legion certainly have. Two TBP wins is the perfect start for them.
It’s been a tough start for the Free Jacks who are going to have their third game on the road. Their opening two games were in Las Vegas and now they have had to hit the West coast. That plus facing the top team in the league I think is going to be too much.
Record So Far
6 from 12 or 50% not going well at all this season! To be fair there have been a lot of changes coming into this season.
