Super Rugby 2019 Round 7 Predictions

Well Super Rugby is continuing to cause problems for all pickers. Did you expect that performance from the Chiefs? Or for the Waratahs to beat the Crusaders? Or for the Blues to be now on the longest current winning streak of any New Zealand Super Rugby side???

Catchup with what happened in Round 6 with the DrivingMaul Round 6 Review hosted by Steve from the Cornflake YouTube Channel.

Here is my video with my Super Rugby 2019 Round 7 Predictions:

Before we get into the actual predictions, I have started a new series “DrivingMaul v The Bookie”. Check out how I did against the TAB last weekend.

Hurricanes v Crusaders – Crusaders by 5

The Canes got the expected win over the Stormers last weekend. However this only went to confirm the issues that they have with their set piece. As I’ve said all along that front 5 is going to cause them issues all season long.

The Crusaders have a front 5 that can match it with anyone in the world. Well they do when they aren’t being rested for the Rugby World Cup. I can’t see this being a resting game for the Crusaders though. New Zealand derby games are just too important Also I can’t see the Saders putting in 2 error strewn games on the trot.

I will be Live on YouTube straight after the final whistle with post match reaction.

Waratahs v Sunwolves – Waratahs by 10

This is one of the easier games to call this weekend. The Sunwolves just aren’t given a chance in the competition by the travel. They had to take a “home” game to Singapore last weekend as the South African sides don’t like the travel required to get to Japan.

The Waratahs have a real opportunity this weekend to take control of the Australian Conference.

The Tahs have been at home all week and will be buzzing having beaten the champions last weekend. Their main issue will be complacency. They have to go into this game thinking it’s going to be a hard game. The Tahs just don’t have the quality in that pack to approach any game in any other way.

Blues v DHL Stormers – Blues by 7

Suddenly the Blues are on a 2 game winning streak! That’s better than any of the other New Zealand Super Rugby sides. Can that last??? Well the Stormers showed last weekend that they have a set piece and defence but that’s about it. That’s shown in their low try count both fore and against.

4 or 5 points this weekend would put the Blues right in the thick of it!

If the Blues can get the players like Rieko and Nanai with the ball in space they should rack up enough tries to win the game. 3 wins on the trot would suddenly put the Blues in with a shout of the playoff places!

I will be Live on YouTube straight after the final whistle with post match reaction.

Reds v Rebels – Reds by 3

The Reds had been putting in performances that suggested that they could win but weren’t getting the results. You always worry that they are in a losing mindset but the last 2 rounds have fixed that.

The Rebels have had a really poor tour over to South Africa where they have lost both games. They’ll be happy to be back in Australia but having to be on the road again will be a strain on the old bodies. I think the travel is going to be too much for them the flip side is that they haven’t lost in Australia yet this season. I’m going with the travel causing an upset.

Cell C Sharks v Vodacom Bulls – Vodacom Bulls by 3

Both these sides will be feeling the pressure to get points this weekend after the Lions opened up a small gap at the top of the table. Common sense says to go with the home side in these situations. However common sense has been thrown out the window this season. The Sharks have yet to beat a South African Super Rugby side.

With the Lions having a week-off the other sides need to take their opportunity.

The flip side is that the Bulls have won all their games against South African opposition. Also losing all their games against non-youth African sides. This could just be coincidence and it probably is. However until last weekend we’d be saying that the Bulls looked like the strongest South African side. It’s another upset that I’m going for, there are probably going to be upsets the question am I picking the right ones?

Jaguares v Chiefs – Jaguares by 3

The Jaguares head home where they have a good record having only lost to the Lions there so far. However they have been away for 2 weeks and that’s an age in sport.

Well that’s the cliché anyway. Teams don’t suddenly become good or bad in that time but they can get their combinations right. That’s what’s happened with the Chiefs. Having their captain head home and miss this part of the tour will be a big loss. This means I’m going for a 3rd upset with the Chiefs unable to backup that win last weekend.
