MLR 2019 Round 1 Predictions

MLR season 2 is about to start! This is the first time a professional rugby competition has made it to a second season in the USA. Check out The Runner Sports power rankings for the teams.

There has been more turnover than you’d expect in some of the sides so it’s going to be hard to predict how some of the teams will go initially. For preseason previews of each team click on their names below.

Here is my video with my MLR 2019 Round 1 Predictions:

New Orleans Gold v Toronto Arrows – New Orleans Gold by 5

Toronto Arrows are one of the new expansion teams. My experience is that expansion teams take time to become competitive. It’s not going to be that clear cut in the MLR and Toronto have been given a power ranking of 5th with the experience team of NOLA in 6th. However I’m going to back the home side as it’s going to be difficult for the Arrows being away for the first few rounds.

Austin Elite v Houston SaberCats – Houston SaberCats by 3

Austin have lost 13 teams over the offseason. Houston have a more settled side even so they have been given a power ranking of 9th. Even so I’m going against the rankings as I think Austin will take time to jell having lost players like Hanco Germishuys and Paddy Ryan.

San Diego Legion v Rugby United New York – San Diego Legion by 3

I think that this game is one of the hardest to call. Legion have lost 22 players over the offseason! To be fair 13 of those have been released be even so that’s a large turnover and you have to ask if they are affectively a new side. Still RUNY are an expansion side and are playing away from home so I’m backing home advantage.

Seattle Seawolves v Glendale Raptors – Seattle Seawolves by 7

What a cracking game to have in round 1! It’s a rematch of last year’s final with the final winners hosting the side that topped the table. This should be a cracking game. Seattle have only lost 2 players who have both retired from playing. Glendale have lost a few more but have recruited well. Seattle though have one of the best setups and the sold out crowd (well I expect it to sell out) will cheer them home.
