European Rugby Champions Cup 2016-2017 Round 5 Predictions

The big daddy of club competitions is back and we are into the final 2 rounds that will decide who makes the quarter finals. Here are my round 5 predictions.

How did your round 4 predictions go?

5 from 10, I had a bit of a shocker.

Here’s my 60 second predictions, read below for my full reasoning.

Glasgow Warriors v Munster

The weekend kicks off with the biggest game of the round in my opinion. Both these sides have 3 wins and 1 loss so this will go a long way to deciding who will top the group. Munster have been riding a wave of form but their away form hasn’t been quite as good as their home. This will be a close one and I’m backing home advantage to just sway it.

Glasgow Warriors by 5

Racing Metro 92 v Leicester Tigers

Racing Metro got taken to the cleaners by Munster last weekend and have given up in this competition as they have lost their opening 4 games. Tigers should be able to take advantage of that and give themselves the slimmest of hopes of qualification.

Leicester Tigers by 7

Connacht Rugby v Zebre

Simple 1, Zebre have lost all their games and Connacht should pick up a TBP home win.

Connacht Rugby by 20

Wasps v Toulouse

These 2 teams along with Connacht are on 13 points in their pool. With Connacht having an easy 5 points coming up winning here is essential. It’s been called a knockout game before the knockouts and that’s true. I’m backing the home side who have recently gone top of the Aviva Premiership to take this 1.

Wasps by 10

Toulon v Sale Sharks

Sale are the third team to have lost all their games and they have been sucked into the Aviva Premiership relegation battle. So I think they will rest players and Toulon will have comfortable home win.

Toulon by 10

Scarlets v Saracens

I have this 1 chalked down as an obvious away win. Then people on #RugbyChat were suggesting it could be a good game. I still think it will be an away win but maybe not as 1 sided as I thought at first.

Saracens by 10

Leinster v Montpellier

This should be a good battle between 2 sides that are going well this season if not in all-conquering form. With Montpellier trailing Leinster by 5 points this is a must win or will they turn their attention to the Top 14 only? I think that the home side should have enough to take it either way but it’s 1 to watch if you can.

Leinster by 7

Northampton Saints v Castres

Both of these teams are essentially out of the competition so I’m going with Northampton who have strung a few wins together and are at home.

Northampton Saints by 7

Bordeaux Begles v Clermont Auvergne

Clermont are currently in the second seed position and are 1 of the favourites to go all the way. So I think they will take the game more seriously and get the required win.

Clermont Auvergne by 7

Exeter Chiefs v Ulster

Exeter are out and Ulster are unlikely to progress so this 1 is down to pride. Ulster for me are too inconsistent and Exeter are in good from having climbed to third in the Aviva Premiership. So it’s home win for me.

Exeter Chiefs by 7
