With a Champions Cup place on the line for the winner, only Montpellier have luxury of picking an choosing which competition they will take seriously. Here are my semi final predictions.
First here is a link to my review of last weekend’s action.
How did your quarter final picks go?
2 from 4, as I missed both upsets.
Here is my 30 second One Line Predictions, read the full reasoning below.
Harlequins v Grenoble
Both these sides are safe from relegation and unlikely to quality for the Champions Cup through the league. Quins are only a point behind Sale but Sale do have a game in hand. Basically both sides should pick full strength squads and there’s no worry about resting players like we had in the group stages. Unlike the Champions Cup Quins are able to host those at their home. With that advantage and the squads experience of big games I’m backing the home win.
Pick: Harlequins by 5
Montpellier v Newport Gwent Dragons
Montpellier are the only side that are guaranteed there Champions Cup place via their league as they sit 2nd in the Top 14. There must be a temptation to rest players to ensure they get home advantage so I’d expect some rotation. The Dragons have just parted with their coach and are looking for new owners. Apparently the coach hasn’t been involved for a couple of weeks so hopefully the squad won’t get distracted by all that. Even if they don’t though going to France is a difficult prospect and they have already overachieved to get this far. So it should be a relatively comfortable home win.
