Weekend Rugby Review – 14 September

It might feel like the lull before the storm with no International Rugby going on but it was a very busy weekend of domestic rugby. Here is a quick round-up of the scores and a couple of comments.

Top 14

Castres 35 – 26 US Oyonnax
Toulon 45 – 24 La Rochelle
Racing Metro 92 23 – 14 Grenoble
Montpellier 44 – 20 Stade Francais
Clermont Auvergne 26 – 26 Bordeaux Begles
Brive 18 – 12 Agen
Section Paloise 9 – 6 Toulouse

At time of writing the round isn’t complete and I will fill in those scores later, but Toulon have got their season going and are climbing the table. Toulouse are the only team that can keep a perfect winning record after Clermont drew at home.

Pro12

Newport Gwent Dragons13 – 0 Zebre
Glasgow Warriors 33 – 32 Connacht Rugby
Scarlets 22 – 12 Ulster
Benetton Treviso 24 – 27 Edinburgh
Leinster 23 – 15 Cardiff Blues
Ospreys 18 – 20 Munster

Again the round this complete at time of writing and it’s still early days for the Pro12 with Scarlets and Edinburgh off to the perfect starts and both Italian sides already struggling.

Currie Cup

Eastern Province Kings 32 – 24 Cheetahs
Griquas 32 – 15 Pumas
Sharks 27 – 37 Western Province
Blue Bulls 28 – 36 Lions

A weekend of upsets where Kings and Griquas finally picked up their first wins. I got all my predictions wrong this weekend and it goes to show why I’m learning not writing about this one!

ITM Cup

Auckland 45 – 28 Manawatu
Waikato 30 – 25 Southland
Wellington 17 – 36 Tasman
North Harbour 28 – 20 Counties Manukau
Bay of Plenty 9 – 32 Taranaki
Canterbury 29 – 14 Hawke’s Bay
Auckland 35 – 29 Otago
Manawatu 42 – 17 Northland

Everybody has lost at least once now in the Championship but in the Premiership Tasman and Canterbury are still unbeaten and lead the way.

NRC

Brisbane City 55 – 29 North Harbour Rays
NSW Country Eagles 37 – 31 Sydney Stars
Greater Sydney Rams 31 – 37 Queensland Country
Perth Spirit 23 – 26 University of Canberra Vikings

I’m starting to wonder if tackling is optional in this competition looking at the scores that are getting racked up! Brisbane City are averaging over 40 points a game, even Perth Spirit who have lost all their games are averaging over 20.
