As soon as I read about Bikus’ afternoon teas this was on my list. What’s even better is that it’s served until 7pm so we could have it as an early dinner with the kids.
The photos in the write-up about Biku didn’t do the place justice. It really is an eclectic mix; part shop, part tea lounge but they are also a restaurant. We got lucky and were greeted by the sounds of the live keroncong band as we went on Fathers Day (they are live ever Sunday).
With antiques and other small items (including dolls that are sold to help a local charity) there’s plenty to keep kids and adults wandering eyes busy. This really is a family place, a very adult decor but with a toy box in the corner, colouring sheets and a kids high tea.
We ordered 2 traditional teas and 2 kids high teas. The kids high tea had fairy bread, ham sandwich, peanut butter sandwich, cupcake, scone and gingerbread man.
The traditional high tea came with 3 types of sandwiches; cucumber, ham and smoked salmon, scones, 3 pastry deserts and a gingerbread man. There were lashings of cream and jam for the scones, with the only thing that I can say to improve the tea is that I prefer clotted cream to whipped but you never find it out here in SEAsia.
We also got bowls of strawberries with cream and the range of teas was sumptuous. Unfortunately having kids means that there wasn’t time to go digest the full list before ordering. I can’t remember which one I chose but do love the old world tea strainer.
At the end of the day this is a fabulous experience that you shouldn’t miss, as I said to my wife as we left I’d have been happy to pay twice the price for it. I’m not going to be able to adequately put into words what it’s like but hopefully that comment gives you an idea how much I liked it.
